“Centering everything back to the child.”

The day nursery is based on a college campus and mainly caters for the children of students and staff. Their prospectus states:

We believe that every child is unique and is a competent learner from birth and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

We are committed to developing positive relationships so that children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and carers.

To this end it is important to the staff that child sees that their parents and their key person know each other and talk together. This happens at registration when the key person is introduced to the child and the parents – this meeting is held very close to the time that the child starts so that the child does not forget it.

The team has identified that the key to transition is that everybody has ownership of it. In this way they have developed Induction Guidelines for Early Years Educator and New Parents/Carers. This is a list of pointers to guide the initial conversation with parents. It includes the following areas that are then elaborated upon to give further information:

Introductions

Key person

Settling in period

Time keeping

Purpose of cooked hot meals/snacks

Appropriate clothing

Records

Early Years Foundation Stage
